ESMERO

(perfection, style, refinement) - what the Douro has to offer!
The wine production in the family goes back to the time of Grandfather Fernando, who planted most of our vineyards and instilled in us the love for the vine and wine production. For many years the quinta sold grapes to make Port wine and produced still wine only to be consumed at home.

As a result of experience gained since 1997 in Real Companhia Velha, a company with 250 years of legendary history in Port wine, we decided in 2002 to start a new stage in the life of this house through the production and marketing of Douro DOC table wines. In our mind there was only one aim: the production of high quality wines - ESMERO, what good the Douro has to offer!

We believe that old vines have a potential that deserve to be valued, not neglected. We believe that a difference can be found in this value added through time: blending different grape varieties to achieve a balanced production, associated with a careful vinification to express the high potential of the raw material.

VINES - WHERE IT ALL BEGINS...

The vines are grown in the sub-region of Baixo Corgo (Valdigem), distributed by 3 parcels with total area of 6 ha on terraces along the hillside supported by walls of stone, with western exposure. The soils are stony and mostly schist, with a parcel of land in transition to granite.

The red grapes predominate harmoniously in schist, varieties such as; Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Trincadeira e Touriga Nacional with other more rare varieties such as Malvasia Preta, Tinta da Barca, Rufete. The white grapes are generally found in the transition parcel, including Viosinho, Gouveio, Fernão Pires, Síria, among others.

The age of the vines is high - between 30 and 80 years! - with high density planting and balanced unit production, which ranges from 0,5 to 1 kg of grapes per grapevine.

It's in the vine that everything begins, hence the importance in producing grapes with high quality potential, capable of expressing fully the varietal characteristics enhanced by the "terroir" where they are!

A TRUE GARAGE PRODUCER

Located in the center of Valdigem our's is a small winery over two floors: the fermentation area, with two lagares of different capacity; and the 'stage' area, with stainless steel vats and oak barrels. The reception of the grapes takes place in the garage adjacent to the winery, so we can claim to be a true 'garage' producer!

The grapes are selected on the vine, cut and collected in 20 kg boxes and taken to the winery where further selection takes place on the sorting table. Crushed fruit is moved to the lagares where it is trodden and maceration and fermentation takes place for 8 to 10 days. The wine develops in new and used oak barrels for 12 to 18 months.
